While digital knitting patterns do not pose direct physical risks, Agasalhos e Bugalhos takes measures to ensure safe practices by testing patterns to deliver reliable results and including safety recommendations, especially in projects for babies, children or sensitive users.

Users are advised to follow safety guidelines when creating items for babies and children, or other sensitive users.

User Responsibility

- Users are responsible for following the instructions and ensuring the safety and quality of the materials used in their projects.

- Users are responsible for keeping the materials (e.g. yarn, needles, scissors, metric tapes, buttons, stitch markers and any other small or potentially dangerous materials) in a safe place and away from babies and children reach.

- For projects intended for children or babies, users should verify that all materials meet relevant local safety standards (e.g., non-toxic, hypoallergenic), and that buttons, pompoms, etc…are secured and safely attached to the garment, where applicable.

a) Yarn and fibers:

Hazards: Choking, entrapment and entanglement, chemical toxicity.

Safety considerations:

- always choose good quality yarns, giving preference to natural fibres, if possible organic, and without toxic dyes or chemical treatments (e.g. merino wool, cotton, alpaca…).

- yarn suggestions and recommendations are provided in the pattern for a better result.

- always wash the finished pieces and include instructions of care, use and safety recommendations, even if the garment is a gift. Including the yarn label when possible.

- Do not leave your baby or child unsupervised near yarn or any other supplies and materials.

b) Buttons, snaps and toggles:

Hazards: Choking, ingestion, sharp edges and points, inhalation, chemical toxicity.

Safety considerations:

- The use of buttons, snaps and toggles should be risk assessed by the user, especially in pieces for young children and babies.

- always choose good quality buttons, snaps and toggles, without chemical coatings or any dangerous materials, sharp edges and points or that may separate into pieces.

- always confirm and test, that the buttons, snaps and toggles are securely attached to the piece and don’t have any sharp or pointy edges.

- when attaching snaps to a piece, use the proper specific machinery and correct settings in order for them to be safe and remain attached for the reasonable life of the garment.

- don’t use buttons, snaps and toggles that imitate/resemble food on garments for babies and children.

- buttons, snaps and toggles must be checked regularly to ensure they stay securely attached after the regular use and washing.

- Do not leave your baby or child unsupervised if they are wearing pieces with buttons, snaps, toggles and any other supplies and materials.

c) Cords and Drawstrings:

Hazards: Choking, entrapment and entanglement.

Safety considerations:

- The use of cords and drawstrings should be risk assessed by the user, especially for young children and babies.

- the length of free ends of all cords and drawstrings should be considered carefully to take into consideration the range of hazards that children of all ages may be exposed to.

- always confirm and test, that all cords and drawstrings are securely attached to the piece.

- knots or any other 3D decorations at the ends of cords and drawstrings are not recommended as they can create a hook or stopper that may get caught in small spaces.

- Always remove any piece that includes cords, drawstrings or similar features before you place the baby or child to sleep (e.g. hats, bonnets, headbands).

- Don’t leave your baby or child unsupervised if they are wearing pieces with cords or drawstrings.

d) Pompoms

Hazards: Choking, ingestion, entrapment.

Safety considerations:

- The use of pompoms should be risk assessed by the user, especially for young children and babies.

- always confirm and test, that the pompoms are securely attached to the piece.

- pompoms must be constructed in a way where the fibers can’t readily be removed.

- Do not leave your baby or child unsupervised if they are wearing pieces with pompoms.

e) Eyes and buttons for dolls and toys:

Hazards: Choking, ingestion, sharp edges and points, inhalation, chemical toxicity.

Safety considerations:

- The use of eyes and any other small components (e.g. buttons) on dolls and toys should be risk assessed by the user, especially if they are made for young children and babies.

- DO NOT use safety eyes and buttons in dolls or toys that will be used by babies and small children because they can easily be pulled out and ingested. Instead you can use scrap yarn and embroider the eye or create a small eye with yarn and sew it securely to the doll or toy.

- Do not leave your baby or child unsupervised while playing with dolls and toys.

e) Stuffing for dolls and toys:

Hazards: Choking, ingestion, chemical toxicity.

Safety considerations:

- The use of stuffing on dolls and toys should be risk assessed by the user, especially for young children and babies.

- always choose good quality stuffing, giving preference to natural fibers (e.g. organic wool) without toxic dyes or chemical treatments.

- always ensure and confirm that all the seams of the dolls or toys are correctly and securely closed, don’t have any holes and don’t give access to the stuffing on the inside.

OTHER SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS:

Weave in all the yarn ends: Always weave in all the yarn ends safely and securely for baby and small children safety. If the yarn ends aren’t properly weaved in the small fingers or toes can easily get wrapped up in them cutting off their circulation or causing other injuries.

Wash all garments, dolls and toys: Always wash all the finished garments, dolls and toys before dressing them or gifting them, especially on a baby or child. The yarns usually go through treatments/procedures through the production process and some may have remains of chemicals and dies that can cause allergic reactions to the sensitive skin of babies, children and all other users.

Include Instructions of wash and care: Always include a card or tag, and the yarn label, together with the garment. It’s important to mention the wash and care notes, fibers used, finished size, maintenance notes (e.g. to check if buttons and small parts are secure and properly attached periodically) and any other important safety considerations and recommendations that may be required by your local regulators.
